White label SEO is SEO delivered by a specialist provider and sold by an agency under its own brand. The agency wins the client, sets the price and presents the results. The provider does the audits, fixes, content and reports in the agency’s template, and the client only ever deals with the agency.
I’m Muhammad Haseeb Sheikh, an SEO specialist, and white label SEO is most of what I do for agencies: I deliver SEO for a US agency’s client portfolio today, under its brand, for clients who have never heard my name. This guide explains what white label SEO is, how it works from the first client to the monthly report, how it differs from reselling, referrals and hiring a freelancer, and when it is the right choice for an agency.
How does white label SEO work?
The agency sells; the provider delivers; the client sees one brand. In practice, one client goes through five steps:
- The agency sells SEO to its client at its own price, usually alongside web design, ads or social media.
- The client’s accounts stay with the client or the agency. The provider is added as a user to Search Console, analytics, the Business Profile and the website, never as the owner.
- The provider audits and plans. A technical audit in the first month, then a plan the agency approves.
- The provider does the work every month: on-page fixes, content, Business Profile management, technical work and links where the plan calls for them, with a written update to the agency each week.
- The agency presents the results. The provider writes the monthly report in the agency’s template, and the agency sends it to the client as its own.
The agency keeps the difference between what the client pays and what the provider charges. My guide to white label SEO reporting shows what that monthly report should contain.
What is the difference between white label SEO, reselling and referrals?
They describe who the client sees, who bills the client, and who controls the work. “White label” and “reseller” are often used as the same thing, but the distinction is worth knowing when you compare providers.
| Model | Who the client sees | Who bills the client | Who sets the price | Agency’s control over the work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| White label SEO | Only the agency | The agency | The agency | High: your process, your template |
| SEO reselling | Usually only the agency | The agency | The agency, within the provider’s packages | Low: the provider’s fixed packages |
| Referral or affiliate | The provider | The provider | The provider | None: you hand over the client for a fee |
| Freelancer you manage | Often both | The agency | The agency | High, but you run the SEO yourself |
Private label SEO is another name for white label SEO; some providers use it for work done fully inside the agency’s own process and tools.
The practical question is how much of the thinking you get. A reseller platform gives you tasks to sell. A white label partner gives you a person who works out what each client needs, which matters most when your team has no SEO specialist of its own. My guide on how to choose a white label SEO provider covers platforms versus partners in more detail.
Why do agencies use white label SEO?
To sell SEO without hiring for it. The most common reasons I hear:
- Clients are asking for SEO and the agency doesn’t want to send them elsewhere, where another agency might win the whole account.
- Hiring an in-house SEO costs a salary before any revenue. A white label provider costs nothing until a client signs. The full comparison is in in-house SEO vs agency vs freelancer.
- Recurring revenue. SEO is billed monthly, so each client adds a retainer rather than a one-off project.
- Specialist depth. Some niches, such as healthcare and local businesses, need someone who has done it many times.
- Capacity on demand. Adding a client adds work for the provider, not for your team.
What are the downsides of white label SEO?
Most of them come down to depending on someone outside your agency, and all of them can be managed:
- Quality is out of your direct control. If the provider cuts corners, it is your client and your reputation. Test them on one client first.
- Communication gaps. A provider who goes quiet leaves you unable to answer your own client. Insist on a weekly written update.
- Generic work. Cheap packages often mean automated audits and template content that doesn’t move results.
- Risky links. Fixed link quotas can break Google’s spam policies, and the client’s site pays for it.
- Margin pressure. Your account management time comes out of the markup, so a provider whose work you must rewrite costs more than the invoice says.
Is white label SEO ethical?
Yes. Agencies have always subcontracted specialist work, from design to development to printing, and SEO is no different. Your client is paying your agency for an outcome and for your accountability, and you remain responsible for both.
Two things keep it clean. Never promise what the provider can’t deliver, such as guaranteed rankings, which no one can honestly offer. And put the relationship in writing: an NDA, no direct contact with your clients, and clear ownership of every account.
What does a white label SEO provider deliver each month?
It depends on the package, but you should be able to count it. A typical local package includes Google Business Profile management, citation building and cleanup, on-page work on a set number of pages, and a monthly report. Content-led packages add articles, schema and internal linking; full-service packages add link building and strategy.
What each tier usually costs, and how much agencies charge on top, is in white label SEO pricing.
When is white label SEO the right choice for an agency?
When clients want SEO and you don’t have, or don’t want, an SEO team. It fits best if:
- You already have clients who trust you with their website or ads.
- You have no SEO specialist in-house, or one who is already at capacity.
- Your clients are local or healthcare businesses, where specialist knowledge of Business Profiles, reviews and medical content matters. That is the focus of white-label local SEO and white-label healthcare SEO.
- You want to test demand before hiring. Start with one client and see how it goes.
It fits less well if SEO is your agency’s core product, because then the expertise is what you are selling and should probably sit in-house.
How do you start with white label SEO?
Start with one client, not your whole roster:
- Pick one client you know well, ideally one who has asked about SEO.
- Ask two or three providers for an audit of that client’s site, and compare how specific the findings are.
- Agree terms in writing: deliverables in numbers, a weekly update, your report template, an NDA, no contact with your client, and month-to-month billing.
- Run it for two or three months, then decide whether to move more clients across.
Want to see white label SEO in practice?
I deliver white-label SEO for agencies: a written update every week, reports in your template, no contact with your clients, and month-to-month billing from $400 per client per month. The packages and terms are on the white-label SEO for agencies page, or send one client site for a free audit and judge the work before any money moves.
Frequently asked questions
What is white label SEO?
White label SEO is SEO work done by a specialist provider and sold by an agency under the agency's own brand. The agency owns the client, sets the price and presents the reports; the provider does the audits, fixes, content and reporting and never deals with the client.
Is white label SEO the same as SEO reselling?
The terms are often used interchangeably. When people separate them, reselling usually means selling a provider's ready-made packages or platform with little change, while white label means the work is delivered entirely under the agency's brand, process and reports.
Is white label SEO legal and ethical?
Yes. It is how many agencies deliver specialist services, in the same way they use subcontracted designers or developers. The agency stays responsible for the results and the client relationship, and an NDA and no-contact terms protect both sides.
How much does white label SEO cost?
Most providers charge a fixed fee per client per month. Basic local packages commonly cost an agency $300 to $600, content-led packages $600 to $1,500 and full-service packages $1,500 to $5,000, and agencies typically resell at two to three times that.
